The Future? This is a featured page

What will the media world look like in 2020, 2027? Can we predict with any accuracy the future? The MediaNet Academy asked delegates what they think. Find out what they think by listening to the audio and video links here and following the links at the foot of the page.

Contemporary Stained GlassA Time of Rapid Change
In a period of rapid media change, legally, culturally and technologically, Christians can either engage constructively with debates, or be left shouting from the sidelines. The new digital technologies offer many opportunities to truly meet people where they are – be that ‘Facebook’, blogs, podcasts, interactive gaming, or whatever is the next idea to catch the public imagination.

Audience Models
With the media increasingly both globalised and fragmented, audiences are both more and less difficult to establish. Audiences are media savvy, expect to be offered the chance to ‘make their own decisions’, and to interact. Sky+, allowing delayed viewing, calls particularly for a need to appeal through general programming, rather than providing “the God slot”, which often simply preaches to the converted. Sky+ also challenges the traditional advertising-revenue model, as viewers skip adverts.

Christians Adapting to Changing Issues
Although Christians have to deal with increasing regulation, legislation (which we need to exploit) and generally anti-Christian feeling, an increasing awareness of spiritual needs means that people are prepared to engage in debates. Amid the proliferation of magazine titles, The Times noted a call for “more serious stories” (27/4/7). Christian media specialists need to be prepared to adapt as the market changes, being more generalist than specialist.
